Our school day starts at 7:35 am and ends at 3:45 pm. During a typical day, students can expect the following:

  • Morning Meeting with Team Time (homeroom) class
  • Four core periods including math, reading, writing, and science/social studies
  • One small group literacy block
  • One enrichment course that rotates each term (may include options such as African Dance, Hip Hop Dance, Choir, Guitar, Gym, Sociology, Community Service, and more)!
  • One lunch and recess block

Weekly, we have Community Circle, a built in time to celebrate our community and provide necessary announcements.

In addition to our academic courses, Explore Upper teachers offer a variety of after-school and enrichment courses each semester.

We also host an Enrichment Showcase where our students are invited to perform in a talent show. What started as an annual event is now 2-3 times a year. The event celebrates what our students do during their enrichment electives that change every semester. Recently, these electives have included guitar, African and hip hop dance, choir, and theater.

Lastly, we enroll annually in the spelling bee and have sent participants to the local Brooklyn bee.

For our parents, we offer sporadic workshops. Workshop themes vary depending on the needs of our parents. We have hosted workshops after school on supporting students with special needs, how to support children at home with their assignments, and other topics brought to us by our parent body.
